While most people who are involved in disasters recover with the support of their families, friends and colleagues, the effects on some people’s health, relationships and welfare can be extensive and sustained.

Flooding can pose substantial social and mental health problems that may continue over extended periods of time. Flooding can challenge the psychosocial resilience of the hardiest of people who are affected.

Gestalt Art Therapy centre, based in ASHGROVE wants to offer their support to the community offering FREE Group Art Therapy Sessions at the centre for neighbors affected by the recent flooding.

This is our contribution and also if you feel like you need mental health continued support, we suggest you to contact your GP to follow a mental health long term plan.

The effects of flooding on mental health:

Flooding is the most frequent global natural hazard. The incidence and impact of flooding events has been increasing world-wide and this trend is set to continue.

The level of exposure to floods has been associated with probable psychological morbidity. (Psychological morbidity, that is, anxiety combined with depression, is the psychiatric disorder most commonly associated with an experienced Trauma, life-threatening disease, etc.) The relationship between flood events, their aftermath and population health and wellbeing is complex.

Many people experience distress after disasters. Personal and collective psychosocial resilience are inherent in many communities and most people will recover with this support.

However, some studies have identified an impact on mental health and suggested that it may last months or years after flooding.

Multiple factors associated with flooding could underlie psychological distress, including fears and actions taken to protect family or belongings, experience of flooding and long-term uncertainties around insurance. (https://bmcpublichealth.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12889-018-5236-9)
